Posting in Urdu and Hindi: a practical guide for social media

How to create readable, on-brand social media posts in Urdu and Hindi: right-to-left Urdu layouts, Devanagari for Hindi, mixing English and captions.

Many businesses in Pakistan and India reach more customers in Urdu or Hindi than in English, yet most design tools are built around English. Here's how to make posts in both languages that look right and read well.

Use fonts made for the script

Urdu is usually written in Nastaliq, a flowing style whose letters join and stack. Hindi uses Devanagari, with a headline bar that links the letters. Generic fonts often break Urdu letter joining or render Hindi conjuncts badly, so pick a font designed for each script and check it on a phone screen.

Urdu reads right to left

For Urdu, mirror the whole layout, not just the text: headlines, lists and icons start on the right, and arrows point the other way. Hindi reads left to right, like English, so English layouts work for it as they are.

Give the text more room

Nastaliq letters rise and fall more than Latin letters, and Devanagari has marks above and below the line. Add line spacing so lines don't collide, and keep headlines short.

Be deliberate about mixing languages

Brand names, product names and prices often stay in English, and that's fine. Keep each sentence in one language where you can, so Urdu readers don't switch direction mid-line.

Make video captions readable

On short videos, captions carry most of the message, because many people watch without sound. Use large, high-contrast captions and leave each one on screen long enough to read.

How SocialNexify handles this

SocialNexify creates posts in English, Urdu and Hindi. It uses Noto Nastaliq Urdu with mirrored layouts and extra line spacing for Urdu, and Devanagari fonts for Hindi. Hindi videos get a natural voiceover; Urdu videos use captions and music, with an optional robotic voiceover. Try it free.
